The Five-Spice Sauce

1 cup tomato juice

½ cup ketchup

⅛ cup molasses

1 tablespoon rice vinegar or cider vinegar

¾ cup tamari or soy sauce

1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger

3 cloves garlic, minced (1 teaspoon)

2 teaspoons five-spice powder

3 star anise flower buds

1 tablespoon grated orange zest

½ teaspoon crushed red chili flakes

⅛ cup hoisin sauce

2 teaspoons canola oil

1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

1 pound firm or extra-firm tofu, cut into 1-inch cubes
